Suggested email responses in googlemail
« on: Saturday 27 October 18 15:33 BST (UK) »
I use a googlemail.com email address. There was a recent update which, although I delayed it for as long as I could, I could not avoid in the end.

I now find that when I reply to any email, various phrases are suggested - eg if the sender had said they are going away there is a suggested 'Have a great time!'; if the sender had mentioned an illness or aches there is a suggested 'Feel better soon!'.  Does this mean Mr Google's minions are reading my emails or is some bot or another combing emails for key words? Is there anyway I can turn off these suggested answers?

I find it more creepy than anything Hallowe'en can offer  >:(.

Just turn it off!

    Open your Gmail app.
Tap the triple-line  icon in the top corner.
    Tap “Settings”
    Tap your email address.
Find the option for “Smart Reply” and switch the slider to the “Off” position.

Thank you all for your help & suggestions; in the triple dot icon 'Settings' didn't have the so-called 'Smart Reply' slider but I found it by going into 'Settings' from the 'cog wheel' icon.  It still wouldn't 'save' so i had to pretend to want a 'Signature' then it would save.

I had done a search but didn't find that other discussion, so thanks JenB.

Still doesn't answer my query about how the suggested replies are generated....just seems intrusive as if the content of my emails & replies is 'read'...
