James Robb - Born circa 1848 - Died 4 January 1898
« on: Saturday 27 October 18 16:44 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

First of all thank you for reading my post.

I am trying to find out more information about my maternal Great-Grandfather James Robb.

I know that he had died before the 1901 Census as his widow - Mary Ann(e) - nee Taylor was the head of the household at that Census - Crown Copyright from www.NationalArchives.gov.uk.

According to an extract from the Tyrone Constitution Newspaper, he died on 5th January 1898 at Cumber, Fintona, after a lingering illness.  However, I can only find a death for James at Fintona on 4th January 1898 - Vol. 2 Page 193 FHL Film No 101600 - Civil Registration Deaths Index of Ireland 1864-1958.  I only have this information which also states he was aged 50 and therefore was born circa 1848.

I haven't been able to trace his birth unfortunately and would be grateful for any details that can be found about that please.

He married Mary Ann(e) on 8th October 1878 at Omagh 2nd Presbyterian Church in Omagh, Co. Tyrone according to the Ireland Civil Registration Marriages Index 1845-1958 and the witnesses were Neville Taylor (Mary Ann's brother) and Joseph Robb.

I have no further information about Joseph - is he James' brother?  Again any enlightenment about James' parents - (in a past request on Rootschat I was informed that his father was Arthur and his mother may possibly be Mary Lyons) - and family and ancestors would be very gratefully received.

Thanks again for reading this and for any help you can give me.

First try looking for the Marriage in 1878  just use Name year and tick Marriage  then search

See how you get on.

It can be better for the person looking as they learn how to find records!

If you found those two then have a search for Neville Taylor  and Joseph Robb in same District.

You'll soon be an expert!!   ;D  ;D

Birth Registrations only started  1864 so then you will be relying on church records but you will get their father's names/addresses on Marriage Cert.

Hi Everyone

I have no further information about Joseph - is he James' brother?

I see a Death, bachelor..... so you need Church records for his birth

Many thanks to Hallmark for your replies - very helpful.

I am delighted to see the copy of James and Mary Anne's Marriage on the Omagh Register and I have managed to find Joseph's Death registration as well but so far had no luck for James or Mary Anne with information on either the Civil or Church Records on the Irish Geneology I.E. site.

I am very grateful for this information but still haven't tracked down a baptism or burial for James in the church records or his death in the Civil records unfortunately.

I haven't used the Irish Geneology I.E. site before so beginning to use it now for other ancestors in my family from Northern Ireland so thank you Hallmark for your advice as I can see it could prove very useful to me.
