Baptism 1814 December Nicholls
« on: Saturday 27 October 18 21:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I know another rootchat member has asked about this chap but I am looking for a Beccle Baptism for a James Copeman Nicholls born in December 1814 the base born son of Judith Nicholls.

She later married Richard H Layton.

Now here is where things may get a little confuzzeled !

I have found an entry for an entry for a James Copeman Nicholls son of James Copeman and Judith 2nd August 1829 in Marylebone, Middlesex and that gives a DOB of 7/12/1814.

Ok so another fact that needs to be thought about is that Judith married Richard Layton 31/08/1818 in Great Yarmouth.

Can anyone provide me with proof of a baptism of James Copeman Nicholls in Beccles?

I don't have subscriptions to the usual sites so proof would be fantastic.

Why would he be re-baptised 11 years after his mother marriage to another man and 15 years after his own birth?

Many thanks in advance.

Neil.

Did he marry Rebecca Dodman 27.4.1835?  If so - he was a minor and married with consent of his mother

He was 15 yrs old when baptised - perhaps something to do with possible employment???

Looking at the 1851 for Judith she was b around 1798 so would have been barely 16yrs old when she gave birth.

Also - although they married 31.8.1818 - Richard & Judith baptised a daughter Elizabeth in Gt Yarmouth on 30.5.1818 as per FS

They also had a son Richard Layton b 5.11.1820 who was baptised in January 1821

Just found the Beccles baptism on FS - had you not checked there?  Baptised 9.12.1814.  Entry is Nicholds but comes up if you search for Nicholls with a mother Judith

Thanks. So she defo had him baptised in Beccles (one of the parishes).

I used FS now and shows him now on there. No parish name again.

Must have missed him using Nicholls.

Thanks,
