Artists Models
« on: Sunday 28 October 18 19:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello I found that my ancestor though marriage was Connie Gilchrist an Artists model and later Gaiety Girl, and eventually Countess of Orkney. Her mother and sister were models for Frederic Leighton. Rumour has come down the family that Sir John Everett Millais Painting of The Princes in the Tower artist models were my relatives too and that one was a girl model! How can I find any records of this if possible. Thankyou

Presumably you've seen this or something like it?

https://wikivisually.com/wiki/Connie_Gilchrist,_Countess_of_Orkney

This from the art world http://fannycornforth.blogspot.com/2011/07/painted-past-princes-in-tower.html does suggest that Millais used both boy and girl models. I'd suggest that it would be in the fine art world that you might (or might not) find evidence of Connie being one of them.  He painted it in 1878 and her bio suggest her modelling days were perhaps over by then?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Get hold of images of the paintings quoted, and look to see if there is resemblance. Queries to the galleries / Museums holding the originals may turn up the information you are seeking. Well-researched biographies of Artists often manage to dig out such details as payments to models, but I don't know if children would have been paid properly for such work.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
