ROBERTSON in Pictou County, Nova Scotia
« on: Sunday 28 October 18 19:29 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather, James Robertson was born 03 Aug 1840 at Merigomish. His parents were John & Margaret Robertson, noted as "farmers, of Merigomish".

James married Jessie MacDonald (of the MacDonalds of Arichat) at Arichat, Nova Scotia 14 Sep 1865.

Any information on this Pictou family would be much appreciated.

It looks like Jessie died 22 Feb.1873 in Glace Bay, age 23, b. Arichat, father Alex McDonald,
mother Mary Saddler, informant was Jas. Robertson.

There is a marriage 19 Dec. 1873 for James marrying Margaret McDermaid, Glace Bay.

Yes, the James Robertson interred at Greenwood Cemetery is my gr-grandfather. My gr-grandmother Jessie died of tuberculosis in 1873. Several of James' children are also at Greenwood.

I could be wrong, but I have pretty good info after 1840. Prior to that I hit a blank, although I think I located the family on the 1838 census.

I suspect that we are related to the Lt. Colonel Alexander Robertson who was originally granted the land my great- great grandparents farmed, but this is speculative.

Thanks to Sandra & dbree for responses. I guess I should have been more specific. What I'm looking for (among many other things) are any clues as to the names of any sibs born in the 1830s & 1840s, Margaret's maiden name, John's relationship to other Robertsons living nearby, etc.

I know a bit about James, my gr-grandfather, the values (keen on education, read books, served in the Presbyterian Church) and his Cape Breton home but I know nothing of the earlier Pictou family.
