« on: Sunday 28 October 18 21:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

researching my ancestors in Essex.
So far I have come to John Wilson married to Elizabeth Sutton in 1797 in Writtle.

I'm now looking for his parents. I believe he was born in about 1757 (he die in 1824 in Writtle (pauper) aged 67 .

Looking for any John Wilsons born about 1757 in Essex I found 4 Johns on Familysearch.

1. bapt. 11 12 1757 Colchester essex
2. bapt. 14 08 1759 Elmden Essex
3. bapt. 5 6 1757 Barking, Essex
4. 9 11 1759 Steeple, Essex

but how do I find out which John is the one ?? Mission Impossible ? Any tips ?

Any help grately appreciated !

thank you

Dutch MissMarple

Are you aware that John Wilson was widowed when he married Elizabeth Sutton?

Peter: yes I know of all the children the couple had (as far as I know they had 6 children). Son Thomas is my direct ancestor. He was born 1898 and baptised 1899 in Writtle, son of John and Elizabeth.

Mark: yes I know John was married to Mary Nunn before Elizabeth. They had 3 children who sadly all died at a very young age.
Wilson: Writtle Essex, Shorne Kent.
Windley: Woodford Essex, Chigwell Essex, Blackmore Essex.

Ambrose and Corteling: Sri Lanka

Hi Dutch MissMarple,

You didn't list the children but the first born son would usually have same name as the father's father and the second born daughter the same name as the father's mother. (also, second born son would usually have same name as the mother's father and the first born daughter the same name as the mother's mother). This might help identifying the parents name and steer you towards a specific baptism.

It's possible that none of them is the right John. FamilySearch can be very useful, but it doesn't have records for every parish. It's also possible that his age at death might not have been accurate.

None of the baptisms you found on Familysearch are particularly close to Writtle. So I would suggest looking for John in Writtle and the surrounding area first. Unfortunately FreeREG transcriptions for Writtle don't cover the dates you need. Maybe someone who has a subscription to SEAX can look at earlier Writtle records for you?

Unfortunately with a common name like John Wilson you may not get any definite answers, and you will probably end up with some "maybes" attached to your tree. ;D
