Hi Dutch MissMarple,

You didn't list the children but the first born son would usually have same name as the father's father and the second born daughter the same name as the father's mother. (also, second born son would usually have same name as the mother's father and the first born daughter the same name as the mother's mother). This might help identifying the parents name and steer you towards a specific baptism.

Peter

Thank you pjm
children were: Ann (1797), Thomas (1798), Samuel (1801) , Amelia (1803), William (1806) and Eliza (1809)

so using your method John's parents could/should be : Thomas and Amelia
and Elizabeth's parents could/should be Samuel and Ann

Is that correct ?

yes I know clairec666, John Wilson is a toooo common name.  :-\

All I can do is try to find out more by posting here on Rootschat, since I don't have any subsciptions and I live in the Netherlands. It's not like I can go to any archives at any given time. Mind you, I do want to visit some places my ancestors lived in, like Writtle, Shorne, Higham, Highwood etc. I was in Dorking last year and visited the grave of my gr-grandparents (whom I've never met).

I believe he was born in about 1757 (he die in 1824 in Writtle (pauper) aged 67 .

Just wondering, how did you know he was a pauper when he died? I can't see it mentioned on the burial register.

I've had a quick look at baptisms in Writtle around 1757 and I can't see ANY Wilsons. So no John or any potential siblings. There's a chance he was born elsewhere.

I received this information by snail mail many years ago from someone in England. I can't even remember when and who sent it to me.

John was married before. to Mary Nun from margeretting. marriage was in 1787.

That's strange. Here's the image of the original register (I haven't posted the whole page because it probably breaks copyright rules) and it doesn't say anything about him being a pauper. I wonder whether there is another copy of the register which has extra information on it...
