It doesn't help with your original query but there is a piece in the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette of 20 June 1893 about the Bernard Gough who died in 1893. He was employed by the Consett Iron  Company at the time of his death and his six children successfully sought damages under the Employer's Liability Act in respect of his death. £200 was awarded : eldest girl £20 ;the eldest boy £10 ;  the next boy 15 years of age £10 ; the next boy 13 years of age £40 ; next boy 8 years of age £50 ; and the youngest girl 5 years of age £70 .

The ages seem to fit with the children in the 1891 census.

A good find Christine re the family story.

Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Did Sarah pre-decease him, as she isn’t mentioned in the settlement:

Dec 1892 Gateshead 10a 515
McGough Sarah 39

Ah, I agree with you then, given that the children are well distributed in 1901.  ;D
