John MATTISON and family
« on: Monday 29 October 18 09:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace John MATTISON who married Betty GRAHAM in 1785 in Aysgarth.  They had 4 children that I know of.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

According to the details of the marriage John's surname was Matson. He and Betty were both from the Burton in the Parish of Aysgarth.

There are two burials in Aysgarth with the abode of Burton

John Matson buried 12 June 1836 aged 79 (yob 1757)
Elizabeth Matson relict of John buried 26 December 1841 aged 79 (yob 1762)

I can't see baptisms for either in Aysgarth.

Thanks everybody.

I'm trying to untangle this family to see who belongs to whom.

Seems there were 2 Betty MATTISON/MATSON/MATTINSON living in Aysgarth at this time.  One was married to John and the other seems to have been unmarried (maybe?)

This 2nd Betty had a son William Storey MATTINSON in 1786.

I had wondered if the 1st Betty and the 2nd Betty were one and the same but now looks like they are 2 separate people.

I am trying to trace the 2nd Betty mother of William Storey MATTINSON.

thanks

John Mattson of Burton married Betty Graham of Burton at Aysgarth May 3rd 1785.
John born c 1757
Betty born c 1762

John of West Burton  buried at Aysgarth June 12th 1836 aged 79
Betty of West Burton buried at Aysgarth Dec 26th1841 aged 79

They had 9 children:
Thomas bap Mar 5th 1786 buried May 22nd 1862. Married Margaret Peacock, then Margaret Coates
Jeffrey bap May 20th 1787. Married Hannah Waller
William bap June 12th 1791
John May bap 19th 1793. Buried March 27th 1795.
James bap May 10th 1795.
Mary bap April 6th 1797
John bap June 30th 1799
Elizabeth March 21st 1802.Died Jun 1866 Darlington. Married William Heseltine my 1st cousin 4 times removed.
Alice bap May 20th 1804 buried July 19th 1861. Married James Calvert.

William Storey Mattison son of Betty of Thoralby was bap at Aysgarth March 23rd 1786 as a natural child.

There is a marriage at Aysgarth which MIGHT be him:
Aysgarth June 1st 1812 William Mattison of Thoralby and Elizabeth Thwaite of Thoralby but be careful assuming this !!
Percival, Hird, Heseltine, Wilson,  Horn(e), Thwaite, Storey, Iveson, Metcalfe, Dinsdale and Sunter and the farms and families of Bishopdale.

thanks for that.

It's pretty much what I had got.

Fairly sure that it is William Storey MATTINSON who married Elizabeth THWAITE.  An Elizabeth is listed a a mother against the children's bapts for William Storey.  And William and Elizabeth are buried with each other in Richmond - which is where all there children were born.

I have her down as a strong possibility at the moment.

Doesn't appear that this 2nd Betty had any other children - or at least not that I could find.

Interestingly enough there is a marriage between a Elizabeth MATTINSON to a William BATTERBY   in Aysgarth in 1794  - 6 years after William Storey was born.
I did wonder if this was the 2nd Betty and that she got married later on?  Have written down as a query for now.

I have so many queries written throughout my tree it's getting kind of funny really but I guess that is the family hunting business :)
