Mystery Castle - Aberdeenshire?
« on: Monday 29 October 18 14:40 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone recognise the castle in the attached photo? It looks Scottish, probably North Eastern. The photo is one half of a stereoview; there is no information on the front or the rear of the card.
Sinclair: Lanarkshire & Antrim; McDougall: Bute; Ramsay: Invernesshire; Thomson & Robertson: Perthshire; Brown: Argyll; Scott: Ayrshire: Duff: Fife.

That looks like Coats of Arms above the doorway.  I don't suppose they can be blown up?

And on the wall to the right of the lady as we look at it, there seems to be a dark "patch".  Can you see if that is something like "hours of opening"?

I can't get any useful info from the coat of arms, if this is what it is. I have tried playing around with it in Photoshop, but to no avail. I should have said that the photo probably dates to about 1860.

Not to worry.  I'm sure there are more than me currently searching for other castles that might fit "yours"

This http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/Castles-Scotland might help - if only by eliminating some of the possible candidates.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

And if you type Aberdeenshire Castles into Google Images, there are loads of photos on there for you to compare!  Good luck! 👍👍

Is there a reason to think Aberdeenshire?
