WW2 RAF Service Record Help Please
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 07:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi There
In my dad's service record, in the mustering section, the very last entry in the Trade column is D/man. Dad had been a fitter / armourer for the five previous years. I can't find the abbreviation D/man anywhere - any help much appreciated. TIA

Often best to post a shot of that part of his record to enable context to be seen.  Can you do that?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Hi MaxD
I've attached a shot, hope it works. The last entry is dated 31/12/1945. Dad was posted to India earlier in 1945 and had been a fitter / armourer throughout, right until this last entry.
Thanks very much

The only possibility I can find in the very comprehensive list of RAF trades on RAF web (a subscription site) is Draughtsman or Draughtsman Mechanical both of which are in the same trade group.  Whether that makes sense in terms of his previous years as a fitter/armourer I am afraid I don't know.  What is certain is that of the many trades listed, those are the only two beginning with D that make any sense

Sorry not to have a definitive answer, I'll enquire elsewhere while hoping that someone else could comment on a fitter/armourer changing trades.

Thank you MaxD. I begin to wonder if Draughtsman might be the answer. It is not something he ever did in his work post war but he did produce very detailed drawings and clay models as a hobby that had a tech drawing flavour to them. I think that must be it. Thanks again.
