School Uniform Suppliers - Manchester

Hi All,

I remember in the mid 1960's being fitted out for my first senior school uniform. I am sure it was in a school outfitters on Market Street, Manchester but cannot recollect the name. I have spoken to others who also remember this shop but the name escapes us.

Cannot be of much help but I do know the Uniform Supplier was/is in Newcastle upon Tyne. Isaac Walton. Takes me back a while.

On Market street in Manchester it'd probably be Lewises.
Kendal Milnes did most of the "better" schools. Became House of Frazer, and currently, sadly, in the throes of closing down sales, after all these years.
I seem to recall Pauldens, and Affleck & Browns, on Oldham Street / Road may also have been accredited suppliers, and probably Debenhams on Market Street may have been, too.

My school used Barrie's (Barry?) which had a store in Bolton and may have had a Manchester one.
Reps took stock to school once or twice a year. Visits to their shop were seldom necessary. This was 1960's-1970's.

I was right, they did have a store in Manchester.

My uniform had to last so long I seldom needed replacements. They were bought in a size large enough to grow into. Then they were let-down, let-out, altered, adapted as necessary. My summer dresses were home-made, from Barrie's pattern and material.

School shoes for 1st year also bought from Barrie's & made by Clark's of course - lace-ups for winter & outdoor; sandals or shoes with a bar (Mary Jane style ?) for indoors and summer.

My school uniform used to come from a shop (quite possibly Barrie's) in St Ann's Square.

First poster in the thread said the store was in Market St. and was taken over by BHS. Also mentions Henry Barrie, St. Ann's Square. A post from Cheethamgirl on the thread mirrors my memories.

Another Henry Barrie one here but a man came to school from the shop and measured us. The orders were then delivered to school.
Those were the days - kneeling down to make sure the skirt touched the floor for the right length - gaberdines, blazers, berets and white pac a macs for summer with a special rain hood for our boaters!  What did we look like
