I too was of the impression 1910 was his birth year as there was no reference to anything else in the subject heading nor the opening post.

Add..."we tend to work with BMD dates rather than a date on a billhead"

I would agree unless stipulated otherwise on 'Subject' heading.

One can say that he " flourished circa 1910". Flourished meaning thrive, prosper, be in one's prime. Or simply "alive 1910".

Thanks for all your useful hints. If I relapse and make an offer via Rooschat in the future I will bear them in mind. In the meantime I'll get back to my thesauri (with its synonyms and antonyms - very useful if you're explaining the meaning of a word, thanks to Roget)
