Brick wall.. William Powell..
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 16:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm not sure if i am posting on the correct page.. but I was wondering if someone could help me as I have hit a brick wall.. im struggling to find anything else.

William David Powell Jones was born in 1926 in Pontypridd.
I ordered his birth certificate which states
Mother:  Minnie Rose Williams
Father: William Jones

I can't seem to find ANYTHING on his parents.. no marriage, nothing.

I found William David Powell Jones in 1939 living with a woman Caroline Phillips and her husband William Phillips.. But no sign of William David Powell's parents.

I guessed that William David Powell may have some family connection to either Caroline/William Phillips.

Cutting a long story short. It turns out Caroline was William David Powell Jones's step aunt. His father was actually William Powell.

I found Caroline with her mother Elizabeth and step brother William in a few census records. The only thing is.. he is down as Powell and not Jones.

I have no idea where the Jones came from.

I spoke to a lady in Canada who was the great granddaughter of Caroline Phillips(Morgan) and she confirmed that William Jones was actually William Powell and he was Carolines step brother..but she also didnt know why he was down as Jones on his sons Birth Certificate.

I hope i havent confused anyone too much. I just dont know where to go with this. feel like its hit a brick wall.

thanks in advance for anything x

Does the birth cert show his mother as Jones nee Williams?  If not - it suggests to me they were not married

There is a birth reg in Pontypridd in 1902 for a Minnie Rosa Williams - her mothers maiden name was also Williams as per GRO online

She's not the mother, sadly

I see that William Powell (born 7 Apr 1890, Pontypridd) was in trouble with the law from a very early age, sentenced in 1901 to four years in a reformatory for larceny (already with 5 previous convictions for the same offence).  He was originally committed to Neath Reformatory but absconded, and was transferred to Wakefield in 1903.

One of the relatives named in his record, in addition to James & Elizabeth Morgan, was an aunt “Mrs Jones” of Cardiff.  Perhaps he later adopted her Jones surname for a fresh start after his troubled early life?

Yes, that is the right information you have on Caroline..

I thought exactly the same with regards to the Mrs Jones.. but how would I ever find this?

Who is this Mrs Jones? could she be a sibling to his mother who married a Jones?

I just don't know where I can go from here. I'm sure I seen records where he went to work in the military too but i cant seem to locate the note now.

thanks for your reply x
