Tenements in Leeds - 1846
« on: Wednesday 31 October 18 12:30 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Thomas Hanson and his family.  He was born 1810 in Birstall, married Eliza Benson in 1834 in Leeds.  By 1851 they have moved to Oxford.

In 1841 he is a wheelwright and they are living in Accommodation Road, Leeds, just round the corner from Railway Terrace, where his wife's parents Joseph (Oil Miller) and Ellen Benson are living.

Q1 - In 1840 and 1846 I find him in the Electoral Rolls for Leeds, in particular in 1846 .  It looks as if he is the owner of several properties; am I reading this right?

Q2 - Does anyone know of any information there might be on these tenements?

Q3 - I can find Accommodation Road on today's map - but where was Railway Terrace in 1846?

Thanks

Pam

Railway Terrace may have been the name of a row of terrace houses rather than the name of a street.

The Enumerator's Schedule for the area including Accommodation Road.  It may help you to pin down Railway Terrace.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Just a thought - could Railway Terrace now be known as Railway Street?  Spitting distance of York Road and Accommodation Road.  :-\

I've been looking at a map and spotted some of the places nearby but not Railway Tce itself.

I would hate to have been the postman as I see that there are several instances of the same names used for adjoining streets/roads etc eg there is a Nippet Tce, Place, Grove, Ave, Mount, Rd, View and Lane all beside each other. But. No sign of Nippet House or Nippet Farm which were near to Railway Tce.

Added: I wondered about Railway Tce = Street too BB

I think I might have found it, but it is very difficult to see and this map will not allow zooming in any further:
https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/431435/433736/13/100430
(select the 1850 map from the top left if this link does not work though I think I have put a pin in Railway Tce)

It is the next street to the left of Accomodation Road. Left of Accomodation Road is a square building, and I think Railway Tce might be the next street - it is a short street. Nippet House is north of Nippet Lane.

(of course my eyes might be playing up and I might be imagining it)  :)

Railway Terrace might have been where Walker's Tce is on this map:

Looks good  ;D  AND there's Edgar Street, plus the "square" is Edgar Street School.

To the right of Accomodation Road is Pleasant Place facing York Rd, and Back Pleasant Place behind it. (all nearby places on the 1841 census)

You have better eyes than me BB. I have the magnifying glass out and can just about (barely) make out Edgar St School. :)

That is called Walkers Terrace on the 1891 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/431435/433736/13/100431
