Brick wall after illegitimacy (UK)
« on: Wednesday 31 October 18 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Started my tree way back in the 90s and got back to the mid 1800s.  Work and ill health prevented a lot of work over the past 15 years.

However, a few months ago, I restarted, and have come up with a couple of ancestors who were born out of wedlock.  On one, it gives John Wright Gartsides'  mother's name as Mary Gartside spinster.

However, the marriage certificate of John Wright Garside gives his father's name as Thomas Garisde.  I found a brother to John Wright called Frederick Edward.  This marriage certificate also gives Thomas Garside as father.

Their mother Mary did marry Samuel Parkinson in 1846 (6 years after the birth of John Wright).  So Samuel could be a possible father to John Wright and Frederick Edward, with Thomas Garside being a made up name.

Just wondering of how I could explore this further?

Thanks

I found them on the 41 census at Prestwich Cum Oldham

Ben Garkide   50
Mary Garkide   26
Lucy Garkide   20
Frances Garkide   15
Ben Garkide   13
Alfred Garkide   10
Hannah Garkide   8
Sarah Ann Garkide   5
Frederick Garkide   3
John Wrightington   1

HO107/546/6/7 p 8

Benjamin is listed as Mary's father on Marriage Certificate

The baptism for Frederick Edward would tie in with John Wright's birth certificate.

On Johns entry in 1841 they have transcribed the Do (ditto) and gap before it as 'in ton' and added it to Wright.  For a moment I thought we may have a clue to his father.

I would doubt that Samuel is the father of John.

Yes, I doubt Samuel is the father.

Quick question.  Is it strange to have two children with unknown fathers?

Appreciated your help.
