Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

People in institutions like prisons, army and police barracks, asylums and workhouses were often listed in the census only by their initials. Thus, Mary Smith will be listed only as M.S. If you think the person you seek was in an institution in 1911, first try the return for the institution, if you know it,
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

If you know the address of the institution, you can browse into it.  Workhouses.org.uk usually gives the address of the workhouses. Maps/Thoms directory can give you the addresses of hospitals and prisons, etc.
Dublin, Limerick, Carlow, Waterford, Wicklow, Pembrokeshire

If you are searching the census with initials it is often helpful to put in the sex (male/female) and an approximate age as it will return people with those initials and age with 5 years on either side of what you have entered.

Workhouse/prison records are very frustrating to search but perseverance can pay off. Best of luck
