This site writes out some common names in the Tamil script, and whilst I can't find the exact replica, some of the ones towards the end of the alphabet do have that final I T or I L look to them.

and I think the 'r' equivalent looks a bit like the Y

I had just returned from a trip around Sri Lanka when I saw this picture, and bought it because it immediately made me think of my holiday. It wasn't the vantage point so much as the boat and people that made me think of Sri Lanka.

If it is Mount Lavinia (and I've tried to attach a photo which I think suggests it is) then it may easily have been painted by a local artist, of course, but I don't know how it would then end up nicely framed in an antique/junk shop in a northern english town!

It's oil on board, and there's nothing on the back.

Mount Lavinia hotel was built in the early 1800s but upgraded and expanded to a 2 storey building in 1830.

Before I read your post and had only seen the signature it looked like
Rembrandt,I know now of course that is ridiculous.
I like it, hope you manage to get information which helps.
Viktoria.

Hi,
Knowing Sri Lanka reasonably well, and having gone to school in Mt Lavinia long ago, I would be almost certain to say you are correct that it depicts the Mt Lavinia beach and hotel.
But sorry, I can't decipher the artist's signature...
Cheers
