Robert Oram - Ireland 1786 hard to find
« on: Thursday 01 November 18 17:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  really new member today, so lots to Catch up on. Heard of lots of different ancestry sites, this does seem interesting.

Have read two posts already in an hour that touch on Mr Robert Oram who I traced to Salford ( my great, great, great, great grandfather ) - only information after that was he was Irish - full stop.

I noticed  "gilesc - Caroline " got this far too and it appeared that "trish1102 " picked up on it too.

I wrote in Robert Oram on this website but nothing turned up.

Where best to look at entries around 1780 -  1790 in Ireland ?

Thanks för your Reply.

Is it a coincidence that all the results are from Dublin - Ireland is a big Place, even in 1786.

Do you know why there are no results from elsewhere, seems strange - not even Northern Ireland.

Perhaps something to do with Cromwell and the churches.

No...they are limited to Dublin, Carlow, Cork, Kerry!

All of Ireland's woes are due to Cromwell!

You may not get many possibilities because there are so few records. There could have been other Orams in other places. Or, there may not have been many Orams in Ireland. In the 1700s you have to start using records other than parish records - assuming they exist either.

If I were you, I would check the tythe records for the 1820s/30s and Griffith's valuation for the 1840s/50s to see where Orams were located at those periods.
