Latin death record
« on: Friday 02 November 18 05:13 GMT (UK) »
From Caltanissetta, Italy.

What I can make out (interested in the second paragraph of the first image, first only provided for comparison):

Vincenza Messana, approximately 80 years old, died 6 Mar 1787, wife of Gabriele. Daughter of Michelangelo? and ???

I previously had a maiden name for her as 'la Torre' but it looks like something totally different here.

The second and third (in a second post) could be a child of the above couple.

Thanks!

And last one for now, this one appears in the book just above the second image.

My attempt at the first extract ...

Vincenzia Messana an(norum) 80 cir(citer) uxor de Gabrielis
f(ilia) de Michaelis Angeli et de Benedicte (?)iceo bene S(anctissimis)
sac(ramen)tis refecta obit diem supremum in domo
sua cujus corpus in (... ...?) S. Antonius se-
pultum fuit

Vincenzia Messana, aged about 80 years, wife of Gabriele, daughter of Michelangelo and of Benedicta (?)iceo, restored by the Most Holy Sacraments, died* at her home, and her body was buried in (... ...?) of St Anthony.
     * lit., went to her final day

I’m most doubtful about Benedicta’s surname – Siceo? Siteo? Neither seems likely.

Thank you very much, that's really helpful!

For the surname, I was seeing xICxOLxNE rather than two words, the second of which being 'bene'. There are some surnames in the area ending with -lane and -lone so I was planning on scanning indices until I found something similar. Scicolone/Scichilone perhaps? This still doesn't solve my issue of previously having 'la Torre' instead, but I will have to do some comparisons.

You might be right with that. I opted for bene mainly because I've seen it before in this sort of context. But I guess the first vowel here does look more like o than e.

ADDED - I think your Siccolone is a good call. It's found in the area around Agrigento, which isn't far.

Great! I also see 'Siccolone' but I say Scichilone/Scicolone because this is the way these names are written in Caltanissetta church books.

Can anybody help out with the second and third images that I posted?

I believe the third is Gaetano, a son of Gabriele Messano. The second might be Gabriele himself. Both died within a few days of each other in 1772 but I'm having some issue reading the associated names/relationships in the rest of the record.

Gaetano, son of Gabriele & Vincenza age 19?
Gabriele, husband of Vincenza, son of Heironym/Girolamo and Caetana/Gaetana? age 69?

I can get very little more out of the 2nd and 3rd entries than you, because the Latin is so loosely written and heavily abbreviated, and I’m unfamiliar with the exact wording that would have been used here.

But I agree with the essential details that you have – Gaetano aged 19 (son of Gabriele and Vincenzia), and Gabriele aged 69.

In the 2nd extract, I did wonder for a while if it was Gabriele’s wife Vincenzia who had died, but I think not, as the parents (Jeronimo and Caetana) appear to be named Mess(an)o, and one of the adjectives (imbutus = anointed) has a masculine ending.

They both died after anointing and all the sacraments. Gaetano’s body was taken away to S. Antonio, and Gabriele’s somewhere else that I can’t decipher.

Sorry that I can’t do more. I wonder if it would be worth putting it on this forum ...

... where there are a few people with genealogical interests.

As long as we're both in agreement about the names and relationships, it's good enough for me. The rest I'm sure will be some church-speak about their burials. Thanks again for your help ;D
