Military burials
« on: Friday 02 November 18 17:59 GMT (UK) »
My father received a military burial in 1952 and was buried in St.Seriols churchyard, but there seems to be no record or location of where the grave should be? Surely the officer allocating the funds, soldiers in attendance, firing of rifles, etc. would have a record or a number for this activity;because the 'clerical' staff at St.Seriols haven't got a clue!
I've even contacted the local MP for Holyhead (Ynys Mon)? and he's given up!
All I want to do is erect a permanent head-stone or marker to show that my father  is not forgotten, but it  seems nobody cares or wants to help!

Just a thought, could it have been a burial organised by the council?
This would be in the event there were no known relatives, but if he was still in the military they would organise it I assume.
It is a puzzle, what documentation do you have for this?
Grave papers etc ?
How do you know your relative is buried where you have mentioned?
Let us know how you get on.
Viktoria.

Random thoughts:

If the burial was in a churchyard, there should be a burial register entry (which might or might not give more information).

If the burial was mentioned in a local paper the funeral director might be named.  Also, there might be a photograph with enough landmarks to pinpoint the precise location.

A search online for local funeral directors might turn up companies still operating which were established before 1952 - writing to them might turn up something.

There is a possibility that a funeral company may have old records.  I got lucky a few years ago and found an undertaker who had records of my father's burial in the mid 1960s with the cemetery and grave number.

Not sure if the War Graves Commission could help you ? Might be worth a try.
There may be something in the local newspaper archives. I find that some reporters like this kind of research.
I'm currently making a memorial for a young Belgian who died in 1918 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Gretna. This too was a full military funeral and our local historical society have given me some great help.
It doesn't surprise me that the church records are non existent, but if it was run by the Council they might be worth a shout.
I hope you are successful in finding your dad's resting place. Good Luck.
Pete.
