William EVANS born 1875 in Hope, Flintshire
« on: Saturday 03 November 18 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am researching a William Evans who according to the 1881 and 1891 census records (when he is living with his parents) state his birth place as Hope, Flintshire. I find him in 1901 and 1911 married to Florence (Jones) with numerous children - they are living by then in Gwersyllt where his wife was born.  William is listed from 1891 onwards as a coal miner.

I am trying without luck to find a baptism for him.  I suspect that his parents are Evan and Eliza Evans who are living in Cyffion, Hope in 1891 when William is 16 years old and at Coed Mawr, Hope when he is 5 years old.

I can find baptisms for his younger brother Oswell Evans and for his older brother John Evans, but nothing for William.

Can anyone find a baptism, so that I can verify his parents?  Grateful thanks for anyone's help.

What was his supposed mothers maiden name - Davies?

Perhaps he wasn't baptised.  I have a family of 9 children where only the oldest were baptised.

What church were his supposed brothers baptised in?  Perhaps you could contact them to search the records for William  :)

Do you have Williams marriage to Florence to confirm his fathers name and occupation

I had completely forgotten when I did my original research years ago that I do have a marriage certificate.

10th April 1899 William Evans age 24 yrs Batchelor, collier, Frood, Brymbo, Father's name Evan Evans, collier.

Florence Jones age 18 yrs, spinster, residence : Frood, Brymbo, Father's name: Robert Jones, carpenter.

Witnesses were Walter Jones and Ellen Amelia Roberts. Wedding took place at The Primitive Methodist Chapel, Frood.

baptisms from the parish church in Hope are on FindMyPast.

I can find baptisms for
Anne 1868
Sarah 1871
John 1873
Thomas 1878
Oswell 1884

but not
William
Hannah - 7 months old 1881 census
Lydia - 5 on 1891 census
Mathew - 2 on 1891 census

From GRO index, mother's maiden name looks to be Edwards
William Evans june qtr 1875 Chester vol 8a pg 436
Although mmn on the registration of Mathew Henry is blank, so perhaps he belongs to one of the older daughters.

I'd like to thank everyone for their help.  It's good to get confirmation of what I had more or less guessed about William's baptism (or lack of it).  And now I'm able to crack on with my research.  Rootschat is a great asset to be able to use.   :) :)

The abodes quoted in the marriage certificate may be adjacent to each other and Shop (y) Mynydd as in the 1861 census page RG09/4278/20/11 and this map
