Brickwall: Adrie Gibb
« on: Saturday 03 November 18 22:21 GMT (UK) »
On one of my trips to the SoG back many moons ago I managed to look through the transcribed Parish Register for Balcombe Sussex.

There in the neatly typed up transcription was the marriage I was looking for:
1675 May 6 Velnick William and Gibb Adrie.
(Ref: SX/R SX/REG/52256)

Now Velnick is a misspelling of Feldwick. I have thought that maybe Adrie might be Audrey.

So now in the super duper tech age I search FindMyPast, FreeReg and Ancestry for Adrie's baptism.
Search:
Adrie Gibb
1649 +/- 5 years.
In Sussex and Kent

Ancestry and Freereg = Zero.

FindMyPast shows the marriage (as a transcription).

Now please don't laugh here. I was driving through Sussex a few years ago now and I was passing a parish called Worth and Adrie Gibb popped in my head and I wondered if she was from there.

I've looked through lots of books in the SoG but to no avail.

Is this the impenetrable brickwall or can one of you kind super sleuths find an answer?

Many thanks in advance.

You can see the BT of the marriage here. You will need to use "tools" and click left to get it the right way.

It should be in the Balcombe PRs somewhere, but where?
FamilySearch say missing years and detailed index
This is the middle of the detailed index!

John Gibb was here
Had daughter Ann bap 2 January 1641/2
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-D1V9-1M7?i=94&cat=275816

Is it the same John who had son William in 1654? Two images further on (im 97) on FamilySearch.
At which time it is births that were being recorded, not baptisms. The time of Cromwell, maybe there are missing Gibbs

Hi Jonw65,

I'd forgotten about Familysearch tbh.  :-[

I've never found anything much on the Gibb family so I'm not sure that Adrie's father was John Gibb. Certainly it's a very good possibility.

I'll need to go through more carefully the years 1639 - 1650 finding the Gibb family names. I have a headstart thanks to you with Ann as it is in the right era.

Thanks again,

Neil.

Hi Neil, I am going to the Sussex FHG library on Tuesday so if you could be specific about a search I could do that for you.

Hi Pheno

Many thanks, only if you get a chance.

Just looking at this time for Audrie/Adrie Gibb.

The parishes that my family are from are: Balcombe, West Hoathly, Ardingly.

If you can just check indexes then that'd be good.

DO you know if the above parishes are on CDa at all ?

Thanks again,

Neil.

In the meantime, a bit of luck
Will of William Gibb, of Balcombe, linen dyer
Proved 13 May 1682, Archdeaconry of Lewes
Indexed here as Gibbs
http://www.thekeep.info/collections/getrecord/GB179_PBT_1_1_36_10B

Can see it here. Sadly can't download it, hope you can save it in other ways

Skimming through some of it, he mentions his sister Audrey Feldwick.

I can't download it either ... I think they have it locked. I did do a 'Snipping Tool' on it ;)

It is indeed my William Feldwick (1648-1723)
Thank you :)

EDIT:
Now it's strange I went to this page:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/685691?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Clicked on the "An index for England, Sussex, Parish Registers is available online, click here."

And typed in William Feldwick as a search and it never came up .. how strange !
