John Arneil b 1774
« on: Sunday 04 November 18 01:47 GMT (UK) »
So, I have a 3rd ggf John Arneil born about 1774, records show he lived in Swinton in 1815 married Elspeth Mather, lived in Leitholm, Eccles, Berwickshire, , had children and died in 1853 as a pauper in Eccles.  Listed as being born in Eaglesham in the 1851 census and on a death record
There is a John Arneil born in Eaglesham in 1774 to James Arneil and Agnes Craig.
I just can't prove that is the right John.  He did not conform to scottish naming of his children.
Anyone out there have any info?
Thank you
Lynn

And 1775:

ARNEIL John JOHN ARNEIL/MARGRAT ARMOUR FR80 (FR80) 18-6-1775 561/10 141 Eaglesham

If you don’t know his folks names, how do you know there wasn’t a naming pattern of his children.

What were the children’s names?

Is this the 1851?:

ARNEILL John 1851 77 737/ 5/ 28 Eccles Berwick

I can’t see him on the 1841.

Does this document not mention his father?:

MATHER ELSPATH JOHN ARNIEL/FR440 (FR440) 20-8-1815 755/ 20 154 Swinton and Simprim

Thank you all, I have all that information, except for the John Arneill that was child of Mary Barbour and John Arneill, maybe a gf to my John Arneil.  Anyway, the one bit of info you don't have is his oldest child Andrew who was my 2nd ggf, first born and there are no Andrew Arneil's that match as a father to my John.  Hence he did not follow the normal Scottish naming practice for his first born son.  His father-in-law was named Andrew.  And being that he moved over 120 miles away from home in the late 1700's maybe he just didn't want to honor his father, who appears to be James and mother Agnes (both possible mother and actual mother-in-law were named Agnes) and first daughter was named Agnes!

And no documents, death etc name John Arneil who died in Eccles in 1851 parents.  hence why i assume there was a rift in the family. Who knows why he wasn't on the 1841 census. He is in the 1851 census.
I had Borders Family H.S. do some research for me and they could not trace it farther than Eccles. John's had a son John who died young and it was listed that my John was from Eaglesham.  And he was the last to die in his family, all children and wife died before he did.  Andrew's son John left for America.  Hence why I'm here.
