gaps in census records?
« on: Sunday 04 November 18 16:03 GMT (UK) »
I've been trying to trace my maternal grandfather (Walter Herbert Halsall 26/01/1898-22/07/1947 born and died in Douglas). I can find him, along with the rest of his family, his father has the same name, on the 1911 census, but not the 1901 or details of his father on any other census record.

I know that records may have been lost, they may have been overseas or any other number of reasons.

Has anyone else found a gap in census records for the island for the other census records?

Thanks

Simon

There is a Herbert Halsal aged 2 (note spelling) living with grandparents but he was b Patrick

Can you post full 1911 details so we can try to find them in 1901

I think this is the family in 1911 :

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7V3-NDB

Walter Halsall 44
Marie Halsall 40
Walter Halsall 13
and other children

I cannot see them on the earlier census.

Baptisms for some of the children suggest mother was Mary ( Aurelia ) Kelly. A possible marriage :
Walter Halsall , father John Halsall , and Polly Kelly , father Robert , 9 Oct 1892 Douglas , Isle of Man

Yes, that is the family as on the 1911 census, but I've not been able to find them, any of them depending on their ages of course, on an earlier census....or any other details.

I would add that I am quite a novice with regards to all of this, I only started about 4 weeks ago

Where and how was this found? I ask, as I've been stumped, hence my posting.

Thanks

Normally, I would volunteer to go and have a look at the Manx Museum Library ;D
But I have a very busy week leading up to the Pokerstars Rally next Friday & Saturday!

Best places to look would be FamilySearch.org - you have to register, but searching records is free; or www.iMuseum.im (click on the People tab, then Advanced Search).

Thanks....you are perhaps a bit closer than me (Oxford) :)

I've been using both those sites and I've not got any further than the 1911 census ie, not even anything for the 1901. This could be due to my lack of experience in these matters of course, but I would expect Walter Herbert Halsall (senior) to pop up on a couple of earlier censuses(sp?), they could have been elsewhere of course, Ireland would seem obvious, but I found nothing there either.

They could just have been elusive at the time of the census.
