Our RC colleague, Frances MNB, posted on an Isle of Man Forum in 2003, re the Kennaugh family living at Moaney Moar:

Moaney Moar is 'Turbary big' in Manx.
Turbaries were where peat was cut for fuel and are on upland areas.

There are two Moaney Moars on the Island one in German the other in Malew - (see http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/ under parishes for maps etc) - however it is likely that it is the one in Malew (grid ref SC270731 on Ballamodha straight) as one tennant giving his address as MM in 1889 was Kennaugh Robert, farmer, Moaney Moar see see http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/ fulltext/pd1889/mw.htm

http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook is well worth a look for all things Manx!

I, too, was hoping to see KG!

Had a look at the IOM times which has a couple of mentions of a Walter Halsall. A drapery/clothes business. J & W Halsall was at Wellington House, 57 Duke Street and Wellington St. Walter's business address, 20 Jan 1894, was given as 10 Duke St, when he posted an advert about a move to larger premises.

There's a mention of a "Walter Halsall. Duke St" in the 20th Oct 1900 edition.

There's a May 7 1898 report about a fire at 55 Duke St, the occupants' escape assisted by a Walter Halsall in an adjoining house.

I see, baptism and land records (as I would call them), I've only been looking at census records, then births, marriages & deaths...and I was just looking at the newspaper records yesterday, considering a subscription to see what they hold.

Thank you all, this has been a great help, not just for the information, but the use of other records.

Checked Duke Street on the 1901 Census - no entries for Nos 55 or 57.

If the property existed , it should be listed and marked "Uninhabited" in the absence of an occupier.. There are instances of properties marked "Uninhabited" in the stret.

Duke Street is nowadays a part of the main shopping street, and is pedestrianised - so no street views on Google Maps.

Duke Street runs into Strand Street and then Castle Street.
Wellington Street is still there, too. But much changed.
M&S is on the corner of Duke Street and Wellington Street today.

I'll try to check out the addresses next time I'm there.
