Edger Terrace in 1841 Tunbridge Wells

I am looking at 1841 census sheet HO-107-463-9-40 where Edger Terrace is mentioned. I am trying to find where this is in today's Tunbridge Wells, Kent. A web search returns no results. Can anyone help.

Wonder if that should be Edgar Terrace?

Sometimes parts of a longer street or road had a few houses in part of it ,given a name -- such as 'Something Terrace' -- so it may have been part of a longer thoroughfare,

Might be worth looking for the adjacent street names shown on that census to see if they still exist or existed in say 1939 or 1911.

No, Its definately Edger. The next place is Abergavenny Place and then Chapel Place.

Hi Stan
I've been following your leads and I have now located pretty much exactly where Edger Terrace was. The terrace was demolished over a number of years to accomodate the railway development. It was located at the corner of Grove Hill Road and the High Street (opposite Hoopers). There is now an opening to a car park on a slope leading to where a new tunnel (to accomodate the southward extension of the line) was built.

In 1841 we find an Edger House and 11 houses in Edger Terrace. By 1851 numbers 7 to 11 had disappeared and the census shows that numbers 1 and 3 were empty with only 2, 4, 5, and 6 occupied. Edger House also had gone. By 1861 number 6 had also disappeared and only numbers 1 to 5 were occupied. By 1871 none were left.

The gradual disappearance of houses in Edger Terrace seems to correspond with the development of the railway in Tunbridge Wells:

August 1843 SE Rail started buying land between Tonbridge and Robertsbridge
20/09/1845 Jackwood Springs (in what is now Good Station Road) opened
25/11/1846 Tunbridge Wells Central opened
March 1848 Grove Tunnel finished
01/09/1851 The line to Robertsbridge opened
01/02/1852 The line to Hastings opened
