John V. Carlsson b.1874, Stockholm, Sweden.
« on: Sunday 04 November 18 19:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

In his Naturalization record into the UK on 02.05.1914, John Victor Carlsson is listed as being the son of Charles & Christina Carlsson, both subjects of Sweden. He was born 25.03.1874, in Stockholm. In 1900 he married Mary Collings/Collins, and they went on to have 7 children between 1901 and 1922. The family resided in Cardiff, Mary is listed as being from Swansea, though I can find no birth for her.

I can find no further records on Mary Carlsson, nee Collings/Collins.

But I am interested to know if it it's possible to trace the Carlsson line back further?

Many thanks,

Keelan

Hi Keelan
Do you have his marriage certificate? If so, does it state his father's occupation?

Also, do you have the 1939 household register?

Hi Ian,

I don't have the marriage certificate for John & Mary. Yes, I have the 1939 Household Register.

John Carlson b. 25 Mar 1874, Occ. Carpenter (Maintenance). Address 16 Devon Place, Cardiff.
Mary L Carlson
Trevor Carlson

I'm unfortunately not in a position to order the Marriage certificate of John & Mary.

Hi Keelan

I have tried to find him but to no avail. I think there is something wrong with his parent's names. Was John the son of Carl (Carlsson) or was his father's surname Carlsson (Karlsson) or both.
According to the 1911 census he is recorded as a ship's carpenter. I wonder if he was a seaman and left his ship in Cardiff.
I can only say that his marriage certificate might help but that is a chance may be worth taking to find him.

Hi Keelan
I can give you more info on John Carlsson as he was my great-grandfather!  The family later dropped an 's' to become Carlson. I didn't know about the 'V' in the name or his mother's name.  His father is listed on his marriage certificate as Charles and like John was a carpenter.  John married Mary on 7 April 1900 in Cardiff.  They had 4 children including my grandfather - Frederick (and possibly a fifth child who did not survive). He was a ship's carpenter but later worked at one of Cardiff's main department stores.
Mary Collins/Collings was born to another Mary in Swansea Prison on 24 December 1879 and seems to have been adopted by the Burke family.
What's your connection with John?

Further to my last message, I think there were 8 children of which 5 survived.
