Many thanks for this and other replies you have kindly made to my enquiries - I have 'Electoral Roll' dates/addresses for Family obtained on a visit to the National Library in Wellington...

Alas the elusive 'Shipping' search goes on, but what such fun this 'Ancestral' journey is proving to be, kindly assisted by obliging folk like yourself...

Best Regards

Perhaps another way to narrow down the year of arrival in NZ, is to request your dad's WWII file, if you haven't already, and see what it may say in there about how many years in NZ his parents were?  (Not 100% sure it will be in the file though).  Or did David himself serve in a war?

I also keep thinking about FindMyPast as I understand they had passenger records too - more from the UK end.  It is a subscription service but some NZ libraries offer access for free.

Another avenue might be the funeral directors for David and Elizabeth.  They often gather particulars in the course of their service.  Or even the funeral notice.

Had you thought about contacting the "Lyttelton Harbour Board" to see if there are staff files / non-fiction publications / archives etc? http://www.lpc.co.nz/contact-us/

Or the Lyttleton Museum http://www.lytteltonmuseum.co.nz/contact/

This could be the death registration for David?

1951/28122   McLean   David   73Y

A copy of the death registration printout may provide a clue as to the year of arrival. i.e. question asked:

How long resided in new Zealand?

[Of course only as reliable as the knowledge of the person providing the information.]

Yes, Minniehaha, his probate, online at Family Search, names his wife as Elizabeth Johanna.

Greetings All

David McLean was born on 20 January, 1878, was cremated on 15 August 1951 and was buried on 21 August, 1878...

Elizabeth Johanna was born on 4 September 1884 and was buried on 18 August 1975...

Their first born May Evelyn McLean's Birth Registration Number is 1908/3375 - I am unaware of the date of her birth, but my understanding is Elizabeth Johanna was carrying her whilst sailing to New Zealand - May Evelyn was 17 years of age at the date of burial 23 December, 1925...

Regards

The 1911 Electoral Roll for Lyttelton Canterbury reads - David McLean, Norwich Quay, Diver (No 1077) - 1914 and 1919 Electoral Rolls still have him in Lyttelton...

I shall contact the Lyttelton Museum for any information they may have on David McLean, my understanding is he was employed by the Lyttelton Harbour Board as a Diver, and subsequently relocated to Wellington to be employed by the Wellington Harbour Board in a like capacity...

The 1925 Electoral Roll Wellington South - Wellington reads - David McLean 65 Wright Street, Diver (No 6513) as do subsequent 1928, 1935 and 1938 Electoral Rolls - he then relocated to Christchurch and is listed on the 1946 and 1949 Avon Canterbury Rolls as David McLean Retired...

As per earlier posting he was cremated in Christchurch on 15 August, 1951...

... May Evelyn's birth was registered (1908) at Timaru (rather than at Lyttelton).
