Ruhama Henderson- 1700s-Newcastle
« on: Monday 05 November 18 08:49 GMT (UK) »
Looking for info on my 5th great grandparents

Ruhama (Rihanna??)Henderson married William Thompson in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England, on October either 4 or 19, 1789 documents vary.

William Thompson is my 5 great grandfather.

They has a son George Thompson born on February 22, 1793, to Ruhama Henderson and William Thompson.
George Thompson married Lydia Lumley in Gosforth Northumberland, England, on September 13, 1819, when he was 26 years old.

This is all I can find. I’m finding very limited info on the Thompson side of my family history.

Thank
Lisa x

In the Durham Bishops transcripts her name is written as Ruha.
The marriage on the 19th October at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne.

In the baptism her name is written as Ruhamma, the only other clue to husband William is that he is said to be a glover.

Interesting that the freeReg entry is taken from the Bishops Transcripts, which is what I snipped from in my reply.

So it seems that the freeReg transcriber has seen what others have read as Ruha as Richa and interpreted that as Richenda. A bit of a jump methinks!

It would be really useful to find if they had any children post-1798, in the Shute Barrington era, because the baptism entry should then include the native parish of both parents.

The name Ruhama seems a bit puzzling - Ruhama seems to be a hebrew name? If you put it into Scotlands People UK you get no hits?

Ruhama - from Hebrew, meaning "one who has been spared" maybe??
"In the Bible, Hosea is told by God to name his daughter Lo-Ruhamah, meaning "not spared"; later, God tells Hosea to call his daughter Ruhamah, because she has been spared"

I have Henderson(e) pre-dating this woman in my family tree in Scotland but no women of this particular first name?

It does seem more common in England between 1700 and 1780, on Familysearch, there is even a Loruhama.

She wasn't a widow was she before marriage to William?
