Hello.
My great grandfather survived WW1 despite shellshock/mustard gas (family information) and i have all his details but cannot find a service record or photo of him amongst various extended branches of the family. They say this was due to his inability to be in crowds, at the forefront of anything and suffered with servere 'black dog' days.
I have searched ancestry. I have read that a lot of records were lost during ww2 bombings. Anywhere else i can try...sideways move. Obviously if records are gone i cant find information but am i missing anything?
He was William George Evance Rood b31-7-1884 WW1 gunner RGA service ref 37403. Died 5.4.1966.

WGE Wood has the number 37403 in the RGA - presumably him??

You have it correct. Only his medal card and medal roll are to be found on Ancestry, his record is without doubt among the WW2 losses. The latter tells us he finished the war in 185 Siege Battery RGA (we don't know whether he went all through with it).
185 SB went to France in Octiber 1916. They don't seem to have a war diary, not uusual among RGA units.

I only noticed October so dont worry.
I found the record. No idea why it says Wood all the way through but the family names listed confirm its him. Cant see anything about him being caught up in gas or anything.

Gunner GW Wood 37403 Royal Garrison Artillery (Wandsworth S.W.) was on the daily casualty list dated 2 Feb 1918

Casualty list? See i cant read the war records in enough detail. Was that on amcestry? Was this a different record to one where his name showed as Wood instead of Rood?
Ah was it on the casualty list part of ancestry? I will go and take a look again. Thank you for helping

It isn't on Ancestry as far as I'm aware. It was in the War Office 'Weekly Casualty List' 5 Feb 1918, but under the daily list for 2 Feb, reported 'Wounded'. The lists were generally published several weeks after the actual event, so the exact date of incident isn't known but was likely around Dec 1917/Jan 1918.
