Armitage Brick Wall Cumberworth Half
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 10:20 GMT (UK) »

Hi Everyone,

I have hit a brick wall and I'm hoping someone can help.

I am researching Joseph Armitage born 1812 in Cumberworth Half, he is listed as being a "fancy woolen weaver". The information, (apart from the names of children he fathered), appears to stop there though. Despite exhaustive online searches I cannot find his parents.

Joseph was married to Ann (possibly Ann Carter).

Joseph's birth date and birth location are listed on numerous census documents and so I know those details are at least accurate. There is a man named John Armitage listed on his marriage banns document, but I'm not sure whether this is his father or his brother.

Two mothers have come up as a result of Ancestry searches, Martha Rowley and Sarah Firth. I have, by means of deduction, ruled both of these ladies out. Sarah's son was born in 1826 and Martha's son married someone else entirely.

Can anybody help? Or hope upon hope, does anyone already have this man listed in their tree?

Thanks,

P

1851 – Cumberworth.
Name   Age
Joseph Armitage    39
Ann Armitage            37
Mary A Armitage    13
George W Armitage    10
Annes Armitage    7
Elizabeth Armitage    4
John E Armitage    10 Mo

As George above seems to be the eldest son I wonder if you had considered the following on A…..y, West Yorks Records, as ages on census not always accurate, or he may have been baptised age 2 or 3.
George a Husbandman. Joseph appears to be their only child and it is possible that George senior was married before?

Joseph Armitage    baptism   25 Jun 1815   Cumberworth, St Nicholas   George,Hannah

Regards John perhaps he was a cousin of George junior, later baptisms show that Joshua was a weaver, maybe he & George senior were related?

John Armitage   Baptism    8 Sep 1811   Cumberworth, St Nicholas   Joshua,Elizabeth

Some possible records on family search.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thank you @CaroleW:) I would say Ann Carter is the right wife too.

Thanks also ColC. I am now pursuing the idea that his mother may have been a lady by the name of Elizabeth Nottingham based upon the family tree of a lady who has just matched me Via DNA. I am going to check out your 8th of Sept, 1811 hint though, because that also sounds like a really promising lead.

Bastardy. It must have been so tough to be a woman in those times :-\

And this is all before the advent of pneumatic tyres! I wonder how they got to take out their ire? If at all.
