Lookup Please - Parish Registers for Bishopwearmouth 1567 - 1901
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 01:30 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone could look at the original image of an entry in these registers. The reference is Film No. 1514549 Item 2 Page 198 Entry No. 396. It's a marriage for William Cunningham & Eleanor Kirk on 18 Jan 1854 at St Michael's Church.

The problem I have is that the transcription record in the "England Select Marriages 1538 - 1973" for this marriage shows William as a widower.

In the 1851 Census William is shown as unmarried and lodging with Eleanor and her parents. So, between 1851 and 1854 he leaves his future bride, goes off and marries someone else who then dies almost straightaway! Then he goes back and marries Eleanor!

It's a small window and a very strange business. Could someone check whether his marital status is correct.

Thanks,
Doug

If you can wait up to a few weeks, I will fit in a trip to Tyne and Wear Archives to look up this marriage and check if marital status is the same as what you have found.

I have just offered to do a look in the Sunderland registers for another Roots Chatter so could do yours at the same time.

Fitting in with my work hours I think I might realistically be able to do this look up at some point within four weeks if you don't mind a little wait?

In 1851 census William is 21 and Eleanor is 13. In 1861 census William is 31, Ellen is 26 and they have a 9 year old daughter Jane b. South Shields.

There is a birth of a Jane Cunningham in South Shields, Dec qtr 1852, mothers maiden name is Richardson.

There is a marriage of a William Cunningham, 22,  and a Jane Richardson, 21, 3 Oct 1852, Gateshead.

Durham Records Online free search facility has a baptism of a Jane Cunningham at South Shields 1852, parents are William and Jane.

There is a burial of a Jane Cunningham age 20, 15 Dec 1852, South Shields St Hilda.

Probably need the William and Jane marriage cert to confirm its the same William.

Thanks for finding out more Wolfie.

You likely won't need to buy a certificate Skinniedipper when I get to the archives in a few weeks I will also look up the Jane and William marriage mentioned by Wolfie.

The catalogue on FamilySearch indicates that this took place at the Parish Church of Gateshead so I presume this will be St Mary.

http://www.marriage-locator.co.uk/cgi-bin/ML_search.cgi?year=1852&qtr=4&vol=10a&page=603&search=search

Marriage Locator also seems to indicate that it will be one of two Churches.  Only one of these Churches is in Gateshead - St Mary - so that is where I will look for this one. :)

Profession:  looks like 'Glafsmaker'
John Cunningham - Glafsmaker

That is not 'f' it is a long ’s’. It is not a type of spelling. The "long s" is not, and never was, a letter "f", even if it is sometimes mistaken for one.  :)

Thanks Stan for clarification.  I only type what I see and it does look like Glafs .. each time. Very strange way of writing an 'S'.  However, I am sure you will be right so most likely Father and Son were both Glass Makers. :)

C word before this looks like 'Coo ..'? I wonder what this might be?
