35 Trimdon Street, Bishopwearmouth
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 05:57 GMT (UK) »
In the 1901 & 1911 censuses the Head of Household at this address (Jane Brown nee Cunningham) was shown as a sweet shop keeper (1901) and a general dealer (1911).

Was that building a shop and if so for how long because it was not recorded as a shop in the 1881 and 1891 censuses and neither Jane nor her husband Robert Brown were shown as shopkeepers in those censuses.

Thanks, Doug

It looks as though Robert Brown died in 1895. Jane Brown died 9th April 1915, aged 62, at 35 Trimdon Street

Hi Stan

Thanks for the information and sorry for not answering before now.

Its very interesting. It appears that Robert and Jane, who were married in 1874, were at 35 Trimdon Street in the 1881 & 1891 censuses but Robert gave his occupation as shipyard worker on both occasions and Jane did not have an occupation. It was not until the 1901 & 1911 censuses, when Jane was living there on her own, that the shop was mentioned at all.

The enumerator can only copy what is written on the census schedule. There is no way of knowing why the occupations were entered as they were.
