Missing on the 1871 Census
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 23:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could possibly assist? I am struggling to find my 4x Great Grandfather, James Scougall, on the 1871 census. The following people should appear on the census;

James Scougall b. ~1818 Borthwick, Scotland
Mary A. Scougall b. ~1823 Borthwick, Scotland

He appears in 18 61:

He appears in the 1861 Scotland Census:
At Brewery (likely Stobs Brewery from other research), Borthwick, Midlothian
James Sccugell   46
Mary Ann Sccugell   38
Alexr Sccugell   21
Elizabeth Sccugell   19
James Sccugell   15
Agnes Sccugell   12
Mary Ann Sccugell   7
Andrew Sccugell   5
John Sccugell   2

He appears in 1881 :

6 Wood Row, Cowpen Northumberland
James Scougall   63
Mary A. Scougall   55
Andrew Scougall   25
John H. Scougall   22
Margaret Scougall   17

But in 1871 he's a no show. He "should" be in England and in Northumberland by this point.

Any help is appreciated,

Cheers,
Keiren

Hello Keiren,

The family are still in Scotland in Borthwick. Ancestry has them as ‘Socragoll’ but I found them by searching for James in Borthwick.

Thanks Heywood!

Looks like his son moved down to England earlier and he followed, thanks a lot!

Cheers,
Keiren
