No Father named on Marriage Certificate
« on: Thursday 08 November 18 12:53 GMT (UK) »
My GG grandfather Enoch Tickle was born in Wigan 13 April 1851, the son of Robert Tickle and Ann Tickle formerly Hall. I have a copy of the birth certificate.
I have also found the birth certificates for a number of Enoch’s siblings.
Trying to move forward is proving difficult.
I have the marriage certificate for Robert Tickell and Anne Hall in Haigh Church, Wigan 28 April 1841
In the space for Father’s name and occupation, against Robert, there is just a line scored through the box.
Does this mean that he was illegitimate or had his father already died.
Unbelievably, there are two Robert Tickles born in Wigan in 1818/1819 and I cannot absolutely determine which one is mine.
I would be grateful for any advice on how to move forward.
Thanks
Phil

Looking at the 1851 census, the Robert and Ann in Brook Lane, HO107/2200/586/42,  already have a son Robert, b. 1848, the other couple in Scholes,HO107/2199/24/42,  don't.

It might be that the Robert b. 1848 died before the census but I'd think that it was the second family.

I was sure it said Robert not Enoch! so have amended my post.

If blank it suggests illegitimacy/unknown

The second one was b. Winstanley, the first was born Wigan. Does that help?

I have baptismal records
Robert 30 May 1818 abode Orrell
Robert 27 Oct 1818 abode Scholes
Robert 27 Jan 1821 abode Winstanley
My guess is that the Scholes baptism is the one, but it is circumstantial
The father of this Robert was James b1772, but I cannot find him in the 1841 census.
Robert would have been their eighth child.
If his father was dead at the marriage, would they generally put deceased or strike through?

I was about to say that, looking at the map, the Scholes one is the most likely.

Add - it the father was known, even if dead, they'd usually enter it.
