Out of the options, Robert being the son of James and a Elizabeth seems the strongest one, they are the only family from Scholes.
James’ occupation as a Taylor doesn’t help, as his son Robert worked in the cotton mill as a stripper and grinder.
Such a pity that the father’s name is not shown on Robert’s marriage certificate

Robert is listed as 4th Son, and you have stated he was eighth child, have you tried finding marriages for some of his siblings. Maybe he was a witness or the Fairhursts were and the father was named on one of those Certs.

Still a bit tenuous though, but if one of the siblings had a slightly unusual name maybe you could tie them together in later census or othe records.

I have identified nine children of James & Betty Tickle
Robert b 1817 is the 8th child and 4th son
There is a younger sister, married in 1840, whose marriage certificate shows her father James, tailor, witnesses Peter Perry and Ann Tickle (elder sister)
Many of the older siblings died in childhood.
The one that married do not show any details of witnesses in the transcriptions of the marriage records.

So the missing father's details remain a mystery  :-\

(Unless he's not of that family)

That is my worry.
I have done a great deal of research on James Tickle’s family.
I would love to say that these are my family, but cannot do that if I do not resolve the mystery around Robert’s marriage certificate.
I have looked at loads of transcriptions of marriages around that time and many name a dead father.
Why not in this case, unless he is illegitimate.
This fourth son of James, Robert cannot be found elsewhere, other than marrying Ann Hall 😱😱😱

James was a tailor.
His (alleged) son Robert was a stripper and grinder in a cotton mill.
They lived in Scholes which was a very poor area of Wigan.
Good thought, but I would have thought that them having any assets worthy of a will unlikely.
