I'm going through newspapers - lot about a James Tickle carpenter but so far no tailor.

There is a transcription of the Scholes Baptism which gives a DoB 26 Jan 1817, however the film view is inconclusive as the entry is in the inner margin and is half obscured in shadow. One would need to examine the original register to resolve the truth.

Elsewhere in the register the pattern seems to be that a year is only included in the birth column if it is not the same as the year of baptism.

Looking through the Lancashire BMDs for deaths in Wigan 1837-1865 for a James Tickle (soundex) doesn't have anyone who appears to match on age. This suggests that he died before Sept 1837.
I don't see any burials in the available online records for before then either.

Have you access to Wigan burial records for 1818-1837?

Sorry if I have missed it somewhere on the thread, but have you noted that the “other” Robert Tickle in the area, who married Mary Ann Darbyshire at All Saints, Wigan on 1 November 1840 aged 22, named his father as Robert, a labourer, on his marriage?

Birthplace is down as Winstanley on the censuses.

I think Sophie decided that it wasn't that one, Ann.

The mother of her Enoch had surname Hall  :-\

My point was a different one - attempting to eliminate one of the 1818 baptisms (the one with father Robert).  But as you say, perhaps that has already been done.

Sophie - what is the birth year of the youngest child of James and Betty? I'm still wondering if Robert's father died when he was very young o he didn't know him.

Usually, if the father's name is missing from marriage cert it's either illegitimacy, legitimate but not known (maybe he died when the son was very young), or the vicar/clerk didn't enter it (unlikely but.... )

Nothing showing on LOPC for that period in whole of Lancs. that corresponds with a 1772 birth.

There is an Ellen Tickle married at All Saints, Wigan on 5 May 1840 who's father is named as James Tickle, a Tailor. (Status unknown).
She is 20, so 2/3yrs younger than Robert who married 18mths later at St. David's, Haigh. He and Ann were living in Aspull.
So it's possible they aren't related. If they were I would have thought he would have remembered.

LOPC don't have any burials after this date of any JT of suitable age either.
