It is so frustrating, all I seem able to do is to keep building more circumstantial evidence, but never definite.
Thanks for your help

I have Robert Tickell in the 1841 census living with the Taylor family in Hardybutts, Scholes

Have you looked at the GRO site  for birth registrations to check on mother's maiden name?

I've done a good bt of searching on various sites but can't find a definite death for James.  As you say, all the evidence points to it being the Scholes bpt. but no real link. Have you checked for a link to the Taylor family?

The only Fairhursts that fit on the 1841 in Wigan are:

Amberswood Common, Wigan
HO107/522/13/5/2

Thomas Fairhurst, 50, stonemason
Ann, 45,
and 7 probable children aged 8-20

There is a transcription of the Scholes Baptism which gives a DoB 26 Jan 1817, however the film view is inconclusive as the entry is in the inner margin and is half obscured in shadow. One would need to examine the original register to resolve the truth.

The father's occupation is Taylor, if it helps.
