Just a word of caution about making assumptions if  the Father's name is missing on the marriage certificate, it may simply have been omitted in error.

There is no father named on my 2xgreat grandfather's marriage certificate, why I have no idea, because he was the fifth of twelve  legitimate children, and his father was still very much alive.

Usually, if the father's name is missing from marriage cert it's either illegitimacy, legitimate but not known (maybe he died when the son was very young), or the vicar/clerk didn't enter it (unlikely but.... )

Sorry - my line keeps dropping

I meant to say that we have to investigate all possibilities.

Latecomer on this thread but...

Wasn't it a case (as in Scotland), marriages usually took place at the brides home or elsewhere rather than in a/the church i.e. the details would have been written in a notebook to be entered into the register at a later date, sometimes wks later & it's very possible the name of the father was illegible by the time the entry was being made in the official register  :-\

Not in England and Wales at that that time, if my memory serves me right.
A marriage had to take place in a CofE/RC church, a Synagogue or a Registry Office, a non-conformist could marry at their place of worship but a Registrar had to attend.
All the 'paperwork' was done on the spot, only the returns to the GRO were done later.

Although mistakes were made. I have seen one story where the bride's father was entered as deceased despite having given his daughter away minutes earlier and being well known to the officials, resulting in some hasty corrections and presumably red faces.

Thanks mac...

I was unsure but thought I'd add a possibility as to the reason for no father's name on the marriage.

Just remembered that Quakers were exempt from that particular piece of legislation.
Apparently all those who attend their ceremony sign one certificate, which the couple keep, and a second certificate for 'official use' is signed by four or more close acquaintances.

Having had time to rethink on this...

Even if Robert's father had died when he was young & he couldn't remember his father's name (possibly known to others by a 'nickname') which was the only name he'd heard apart from 'your/our father', surely at least his surname would have been on the marriage?

I think this Robert was more likely illegitimate or...had he disowned his father for some reason  :-\

What were the names of Robert & Ann's children in order as this may help with parentage?

We tend to call it the 'Scottish naming pattern' but it was actually used all over the UK.
