Sorry that should have read Plumstead (I was on my ipad and it has a nasty habit of changing text ::) )

Ok so George used several names...
he was born George Walter Robert Burdett (sometimes called himself George Charles)
born 15 Aug 1883 to George W Burdett and Emma (Murfet) in Tottenham
his mother died when he was 4 and appears to have been bought up by his grandparents

From his Royal Fusilier discharge papers (on Ancestry)
Attested 24 April 1902 Royal Fusiliers
service number #1405819 former number 33735
Gunner and musician (bandsman)
married Beatrice Payne Sept 1912
2 daughters and one son George William 1915, Katherine W 1917 and living daughter 1920)
discharged 23 Nov 1923 at Dover
medals British War, Victoria  and 1914-1915 star.. Plus long service and good conduct
address on discharge was in Woolwich though the children were all born Plumstead
he received a small pension
there is also a remark No 9519 4/R Fusiliers

As he was still in the army after 1920 he doesn't appear in the service/pension/medal records on Ancestry.

George died 7 April 1929 Bournemouth

Thank you again Sandra

Jenny, Sorry I have not read all of Sandra's replies but have you tried looking on Fold 3  as that is also free this weekend.

Mind you I have found their search facility awful as it was not bringing up records of those I knew were there until I put a service number in.  If they were there they were amongst a load of irrelevant results.

Hi Rosie,

Yes, but it just keeps telling me to subscribe as these records appear to be on the US site and not UK.

Though, I have just this minute subscribed to worldwide (on the very favourable discount) and still having trouble finding the record set even though I have linked Fold3 to Ancestry.  I will try from the blog link I posted earlier, hopefully I can download the records for Austin at the very least.

I do have others I would like to look up but the above 2 are the most important to me.

I hope you manage to find them.  I have found one of mine who was born and lived in a village in Cambridgeshire who died in WW1 and they have him transcribed as being in the USA forces not UK.

I will be having another go and tracking down some others of mine later  :)

I haven't found the right George Burdett but his military career was difficult to trace down in the first place! He's my husband's grandfather.

I have found a great uncle on my side of the family... he was married and was KIA 1914 but it was his mother who claimed a pension not his wife! :o
I found another Great uncle too, a few more to find... I come from a large family  ;D

From his Royal Fusilier discharge papers (on Ancestry)

But you say his record isn't on ancestry, because he was discharged after 1920?
There is George Charles Burdett on the other main website, in the Royal Artillery Attestations

Jonw65,
I meant he wasn't found in the medal card index, pension or service records and I mean this was years ago!

As mentioned, I  later found him in the RF discharge papers under the name George CHARLES Burdett (not his birth name of George Walter Burdett) and also in later released datasets.  Regarding the pension ledgers, I was interested to see if there was "any other information"/

They are on the UK site
UK, WWI Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=61588

From the UK site you get free access to the images on Fold3 this weekend.
At the moment ancestry page is sometimes changing from .co.uk to .com during searches. Very annoying!
