1881 is the dob of James Smith Dorward, his son.
.

Yes. His actual dob is on several of the records I found. (Didn’t write it down sorry)

1911, is James Dorward living in Scotland, or just there between ships?

I think living there. He retired 1908, was supposed to be going to London to children. Perhaps he didn’t like it, came back and went to live at Muirhead with a relation?? Hence death of the other James the school teacher of same place. But I think you need to look at the 1911 census.

Add...What lead you to believe there may have been another marriage to a McCulloch or at least another son named Robert?
I can't find a marriage so far.

I couldn’t see anything either. Was ignoring that side 😀

To fill in a few gaps, here is everything that I knew up until yesterday morning.

I have added it as a PDF.  Thanks for all your efforts.  I found several retirement notices for James Dorward yesterday.  Thanks for your time and effort.

17:07 UPDATE.  I just noticed an error in my PDF for Ellen.  I think a 'cut and paste' went wrong.  The POSSIBLE marriage, no date, no location, no citation, to Alexander McCulloch is recorded here, undated:

Apologies for not replying sooner, but I'm sure you realise that there were a lot of free offers available this weekend, keeping me busy.

Risinish, The Barbara Laird McLaren is VERY interesting, as it explains the news article reporting the death of Ellen's husband John McLaren, mentioning two children at home.  I can't see any further trace of BLM, but Barbara was Ellen's mother's name.  I wonder what happened to little Babs by 1891?  Any ideas are welcome.

Mckha, I have found James Laird McLaren now, in 1901, 1911, Marrying in 1922, in North End Road Fulham in 1924 and dead in 1929.

I've mentioned elsewhere here that the 1891 Census Alexander Road, Ealing, lists Ellen's mother Barbara (Nee Lawson) mistakenly as 'Rebecca' while being married to Captain Laird.  Also listed are their son together, Alfred, as well as James Laird McLaren, grandson (Ellen's son), while Ellen and James Dorward are a few hundred yards up the road in Felix Road, Ealing.

You have both helped so much.

I am still puzzled by this possible erroneous link on FamilySearch.

Mckha, What do you think about the Lawson/McCulloch marriage possibility?  I found several possible dead McCullochs, but I admit to struggling with Scottish family research.

If this is the right pair, I wonder what happened to the son Robert, mentioned on FS.

I think Barbara in Perth in 1971 is quite possible.  Unmarried.  Where do you find this information?  I only know of Scotlandspeople.

I’ve got to go to work now, so will look harder tonight, but

Can you see Alexander/Helen in 1881 that would rule them out.

Midlothian is a bit out of area but then, so is London!, I think only way to be sure is going to be to bite the bullet and buy the marriage cert. at least it’s a Scotland’s people one, so not outrageous.

And... Scotland’s People is where I found them  :)   Using the Advanced Search facilty

Barbara came up in the basic search. BUT  There is another Barbara Laird McLaren who died in kelvin grove, 1952 age 75  >:(
