Davis family bermondsey help
« on: Thursday 08 November 18 20:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone. I am looking for some help finding out about my grandads family. His name was Sidney Charles Davis (1933-2008). His father was Thomas Henry Davis (1893-1958) and his mother was Edith Clements (1890-?) My grandad has a sister called Ellen (1928-2011) and a brother called Henry (1912-1974). I know he had more brothers but cannot find any information on them anywhere. They lived around Storks Road. Any help would be amazing.
Thanks
Kenny

Have you looked on freebmd for Davis births with a mothers name of Clements?

www.freebmd.org.uk

The Davis/Clements marriage was Dec qtr 1911 so any births after that day will be easy to search for as mothers maiden name will be shown

Thank you for helping. I have already found my grandads brother which I couldn't using my normal site. The freebmd is a bit difficult at first but I am getting used to it. Thanks once again

Looking at Davis/Clements births from 1912 there are a number in the London area.  What you need to be careful of is other marriages between the same names as they could also have children during the same period

1917 Lambeth - Jessie Clements to Frederick Davis
1918 Wandsworth Edwin Davis to Kate Clements

Hi
Their marriage at St Mary's Southwark  27 Nov 1911 gives his occupation as soldier  age 20 father Francis Davis labourer and Edith d of Thomas Clements age 21.
This may explain why he is already called up in 1939 and missing from the index.
His service record may help.
The census suggests Royal Field Artillery

ps it looks like mother Edith died at Rotherhithe Hospital 9.7.1937 age 47

If Thomas was a soldier at the time of his 1911 marriage, have you looked for a military record for him?  If there is one which has survived, it may list the children’s names and birthdates for you.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)
