Seeking information on Ernest George Addlestone
« on: Friday 09 November 18 02:57 GMT (UK) »
Earnest George Addlestone was born  in 1886 in Chiswick Middlesex England. I have found some records of him being in the merchant navy and visiting Australia. I think that according to family legend he settled there. Probably in Queensland about 1903. Any information would be helpful ( marriage and death)

thanks David

He was in Tassie in 1903, 2nd column:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article35550693

FALL DOWN A SIIP'S HOLD' HOBART, Monday. Ernest Addlestone, aged 17, apprentice on board the ship William Tillie, in port, fell down the hold to-day, and sustained an injury to his hip and wrist. He was admitted to the hospital.

In court in NSW, second last column, 1916:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article194819312

In trouble in NSW, but from QLD in 1918, second column:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article123419176

The last mention I see for him is in 1933, first column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article237905077

His 1918 theft report has him as a soldier, but I canít see a military record.

I also canít see marriages or death in NSW and QLD.

Thanks that was quick!!... I have been trying to  find any record of a marriage, it does say somewhere that he was a returned serviceman. Is there any access to Austrailian Military Records for WW1?

Regarding the military, I have looked on the government site, and canít see him. Folk will come along here that may find his record, though.

I added some things to my earlier post.

The 1918 Queensland Police Gazette  has
   Apprehensions
   Ernest Addelstone (alias Armstrong)

Here is site to check for WW1 service http://www.naa.gov.au/

There is a record for Ernest George ARMSTRONG 1916-1920, service number 5864 but it has not been digitised and has no POB or NOK.   Most unusual!

Ros

adding : and another Ernest George ARMSTRONG with POB Colac Victoria and NOK mother Mary Ann ARMSTRONG who enlisted in South Australia and SERN 1879A.   I assume this is NOT him.

....

If that is referring to the indexed item that is part of series D2994, and with barcode
1970738 then it is not at all unusual.

Here  http://soda.naa.gov.au/record/1970738/1

Simply put, is not at all unusual for Series D2994 files to not be digitised. Afterall that series is not the series containing WWI AIF service files.  The service records are usually at Series B2455.  It was the digitising of most of the files that had not yet been digitised within Series B2455 that was funded by the government.  Many of the B2455 files had been digitised long before the federal government undertook that project once the last of the AIF WWI service personnel were no longer living.   It is hoped that at some time in the future the federal government will undertake a similar funding for the WWII service files.   I am not aware of any 'push' to have funding provided for any mass D2994 file  digitisation.

Hereís some information re B2455:

There are 2 indexings in the one edition of the Qld Gazette mentioned above.(1918)
The second notes under the heading-

Ernest ADDLESTONE alias ARMSTRONG.

There are shipping and crew records and images which show E ADDLESTONE as AB as mentiioned.

He deserted from "OMRAH" 1909
E. ADDLESTONE AB
Born abt 1886

A handwritten note strikes through his name and says deserted Sydney 28/12/1909.
(Another AB went too, C. ADAMS)

The last mention I see for him is in 1933, first column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article237905077
