Admin/Probate papers for Joseph Henry Tucker - gentleman
« on: Friday 09 November 18 12:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi guys,

I’ve been working on Administration/Probate papers for my 3rd great uncle who died in 1981, Dublin. It’s confirmed a few things. He died Intestate “A bachelor with no parent” at the age of 79. The papers were lodged by his sister Susan, a spinster and she was 70.

He's listed as “Joseph Henry Tucker, gentleman” and the estate was valued at £7086.10. Gentleman is given as his occupation. What exactly would it have meant to be listed as a gentleman in these papers? I suppose I don't really associate that word with what I know was a pretty much working class family.

Any insight would be great, thanks in advance.

Is this him?

My understanding is a man with his own means, didn't need an occupation, a man of leisure
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hallmark, that's the man all right. I figured it was something like that but I wasn't sure if an entire estate worth £7000 would be enough to class him as a man of means.

Maybe not, but it would be what Susan termed him as.

According to this the house was in the same family since 1953 the same year that his father died

The house only sold in August of this year. I  wonder who inherited it after Susan died in died in 2000 as a spinster with no children of her own.

I'm in town at the minute so I might risk the disastrous weather for a trip to Werburgh street for death records for Joseph Henry, Susan and Agnes. She was the other sister mentioned as beneficiary on his Inland Revenue Affidavit.
