The origin of the name Gunnion/Gunnan
« on: Friday 09 November 18 17:11 GMT (UK) »
Hey all,

In my tree I have an Arthur Rice marrying an Ann Muldoon at St Mary's RC in Belfast.

Arthur's father is also called Arthur but his mother is called Ann Gunnion.

I've tried searching that name without a huge amount of luck. I saw a houseofnames entry which to be honest I don't really trust given their track record on name origins. Then I stumbled upon Arthur's birth record which lists his wife as Gunnan.

Does anyone have any experience with those names or if they are corruptions?

EDIT: I would post the marriage record but for some reason it does not appear in the civil records. Definitely exists though in the church. Have attached the image in case it's a bad transcription.

Thanks.

Hello,
You haven't posted any dates and then mention ‘Arthur’s birth record which lists his wife as Gunnan’.
Is this an error?

There is a baptism for Arthur Rice, 29th July 1838 with mother Ann Gunion.
Is that your Arthur?

Thanks both for the reply.

@Heywood
Yes the dates match. I have never seen that record. I got my information from a church baptism on rootsireland. The record says the mother is Ann Gunnan and the parish/district is listed as the Union Workhouse, Belfast. I don't know if I can post it as it is paid content.

EDIT: Just realised my previous sentence  made no sense.

The thing is as well, is it lists a Reverend H Hanna and sponsors as John Neery and Mary Donelly. This info isn't on that record. So I am a bit confused. I mean the dates and names match. Maybe the record on rootsireland is messed up.

Good find thanks.

Still not sure of the origin though.

Your record looks like Gunnion, I think.

When did they marry although a civil record would not show his mother’s name.

Certainly not on register....so maybe ask for explanation if you had to pay for it!

The thing is the John Neery makes sense as you can trace Arthur Rice Sr using the address on the St Mary's marriage record and a John Neery lives next to him on the street directory of Belfast. So that's why I reached the conclusion that it was correct. But i mean what are the odds that the exact same names and date appear in that church record?

The date of the marriage is the 7th January 1869. Arthur Rice to Ann Muldoon. Parents Arthur Rice and Ann Gunnion and Henry Muldoon and Margaret Montgomery at St Mary's RC, Belfast.

I have searched and not found this record on GRONI.

Cheers, i've seen that before.

A long line of Arthurs. I am hoping to maybe find Arthur and Ann Gunion's marriage in the records now. Thanks! :)
