As Nanny Jan says.  He would have been reported missing initially until his unit were able after the action to take stock and work out when men were last seen, which is where the date came from.

He died in the action to take Hill 70 in the Battle of Loos.  The Commander in Chiefs despatch about the battle is here

On the link below, Hill 70 is in the bottom right quarter of square H 31 and Puits 14 Bis (mentioned in the despatch) a little to the north.
