Fane was one of the options that I tried but couldn't find any near matches.

It does look a possibility on the bond but, on the register, the third letter is the same as a 'u' on other entries and unlike the 'n'.

Joseph made his mark on the licence and so wouldn't know what was written. Presumably, both the person who wrote out the licence, and the person who recorded the marriage, interpreted what Joseph or Rebecca said. I am still not sure what it was.

Wonder if they realised what a challenge their writing skills would pose some 300 years approx down the track.?

Based in the possibility of FANE I actually located a marriage with full date.

Which was the marriage?

I found a couple of Fane marriages but one turned out to be Far and the other Faux.

Also an interesting baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of John and Rebecca, in Leicester in 1731. One transcription has the surname as Fane and the other Faux. The surname is very similar to the marriage register for Rebecca who married Joseph in 1732.

Hello David,

Sorry for delay in replying as I have been away.

Attached is a clipping of the actual marriage as noted in my previous post.

Your thoughts?

Did Joseph remarry to Elizabeth Kirk at Newbold Verdon in 1741?
All the baptisms that I can see indexed to Joseph and Rebecca/Elizabeth were at Newbold Verdon.

Rebecca was buried at Barlestone. Both there and at Newbold there are some Fern/Fearn etc. burials in the same era.
Doesn't seem such a leap, Fane for Fern, perhaps there might be a connection.

The probability certainly fits and Thern could easily be misunderstanding of Fern.

The full list is:-

Fearn Elizabeth 1696
Fearn Frances 1698 - son
Fearn Mary 1700
Fearn Darothy 1701
Fearn Richard 1703
Fern Sarah 1705 - no parents on the image
Thern Rebecca 1709

Richard Ferne of Barlestone married Mary Bradford of Newbold Verdon on 3rd May 1728

I can't find a marriage for William and Elizabeth, although there was one of William to Mary George in Desford in 1692.
