I am trying to confirm that the Reverend James MEARNS I have (born 1806-1884)   the son of John MEARNS and Margaret BARTLETT.  Can anyone give me proof?

I think he's more likely to be the son of Robert Mearns and Isobel Nichol - they had a son, James, baptised 10 Mar 1806 in Bourtie. The 1841 census has James Mearns and his first wife Ann Reid with an Isobel Mearns, aged 71.

As Rosie says, having a look at his death registration should confirm the name of his parents, assuming whoever registered the death knew who they were.

Yes Ruth I would say so several tree's have his parent's as Robert Mearns and Isobel Nicol
Certificate is the only way forward ..One tree has the father for Isobel Nicol  Mearns as John Mearns and  mother Margaret Bartlett  ???

www.findagrave.com has a picture of the grave for James Reid with a mention of Ann Reid quite hard to read as the picture of the grave stone is from the side
