Where was Okowitu near Albany north of Auckland?
« on: Saturday 10 November 18 09:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello.
In an electoral roll of 1857, there was an electorate called Lucas' creek, now called Albany.
An ancestor's name is in the list, with his address recorded as "Okowitu". I can't find this place anywhere and suspect it may have been misspelled (another householder is recorded as living in "Whangaproa") or no longer in existence.
Any ideas anyone?
Regards, Charlie.

I realise looking at those other districts that Okowitu might not necessarily be in the area of Lucas Creek

Nothing showing in the diaries of Charles Septimus Clarke, though slightly out of his area.

Added, and where is Waigogoe?  Never heard of that either.

I see there is a Hokowhitu Place on the Albany Massey campus,  however this might be named after the suburb of Palmerston North, although that seems a strange thing to do.

Lucas Creek still exists as a location if not an electorate.

Waigogoe does not sound even remotely like a Maori place, mispronounced and bad spelling I think! Can't image where this would be!

Okowitu, if a Maori place name should have the (h) in it, Hokowhitu would be a good pick.

Some type of old land registration or old map might show something
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

Maybe  "Okowitu" was the name of the property and not the area

Hi.

No available time at the moment to research for you, but keep in mind that at that period, and general area, access was via the sea, so most settled close to the coast and tidal inlets. There were only a few "Native" trails and portages, across country, which tended to follow ridge lines and passes through some fairy ruggered country.

You could try the Auckland Library map and plan collection.

Have a look at this, another one who has Okowitu for their place of residence.   Scroll down to Lucas Creek - 26.

I’ve been working under the assumption that was the original source of the query.  Could be wrong of course 😀
